Diablo 4 Item Upgrades
Upgrades to items let players increase the item level of equippable items such as weapons or armor, as well trinkets up to a certain amount. You can upgrade items at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.

There are also universal upgrades that can be fitted into any type of equipment. These upgrades provide smaller rewards than those restricted by type, but are much easier to obtain. Some of these upgrades are gems which can be created in the jeweler's workshop, and can be utilized in any trinket slot. item upgrader are inorganic augmentations that can only be used in weapons, and provide a small bonus that doesn't boost damage.
Requirements
Upgrades are an essential component of enhancing the strength and efficiency of your characters during battle. Upgrades can increase an item's stats, or add a prefix or suffix. The amount of stats an item can upgrade depends on its rarity. Upgrades can be found in dungeons, raids, or purchased from vendors. You can also get them randomly or by looting other players.
There isn't a tenable game design solution to the issue of the "not worth it" feeling that some players have about upgrading certain items. The game should provide more information in its compare interface on the upgrade, for example: "X stats gained, or X stats lost." However, this isn't practical to implement due to how much complexity goes into the process of comparing. There isn't enough room in the UI to implement it correctly.
Another option is to write an application that checks the requirements for upgrading an item before allowing it to be upgraded. This approach is ideal for systems that have a limited amount of upgradeable items and a straightforward upgrade dependency. A sword can be upgraded from Sword+1 to Sword+2. A script could check for the Item Definition attribute for every upgrade, and then change the Item Status to "upgraded" to show that the upgrade was valid.
This option is more flexible than the other two, but it requires some additional code. It is also less appropriate for extremely complex systems.
Another possibility is to let players improve their armor and weapons by applying certain upgrades. These upgrades, referred to as refores by some, boost the item's stats and decrease the cost of the item. Reforges are different in their power, but the strongest reforges are the Orb of Transmutation and Orb of Embrace.
Costs
The upgrade of a piece of equipment can boost its physical strength, spell power and health (for rings and armor) or provide bonuses when it's in your inventory. You can either make upgrade components or purchase them from vendors. You can also collect or drop them from other players, or collect them as a reward. Upgrade components can be inserted into weapons, armor and trinkets. They can also be affixed to tools for gathering. Most upgrade components can only be replaced by an Upgrade Extractor. The only exception is glyphs. They are salvageable using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or the Ascended Salvage tool.
Based on the type of item, upgrading an item may cost Dilithium or gold. A lot of upgrades require Flightstones or crests. The amount of crests and Flightstones needed to upgrade an item is contingent on the gear's level and the maximum upgrade level is established by Blizzard. Upgrades to the highest level are expensive especially when it comes to upgrading PvE equipment.
Item upgrades can also change the type of ammunition a weapon uses or damage die size change its operative or unwieldy special weapon property, or alter the requirements for hand use. Certain upgrades can alter the appearance of a weapon.
While boosting stats is the primary purpose of upgrades to items, you should consider the costs associated with upgrading an item prior to making an investment. You might want to make use of your gold for upgrading rare items, but do not spend it on standard or items of the magic-tier.
